ST. EUSTATIUS–Firefighters from St. Eustatius and Saba took part in two weeks of aircraft-firefighting training. Six colleagues from the fire department of Saba took part in the mandatory training, said Acting Fire Chief of the St. Eustatius Fire Department Chester Tearr.

Three firefighters from Statia travelled to Saba to take the place of their colleagues on the “Unspoiled Queen,” said Tearr.

The firefighters took part in daytime and night-time training. They were trained on the aircraft fuselage and on situations related to aircraft engine problems, such as the extinguishing of burning aircraft motors and fuel leakages, which were all simulated at the aircraft fire training ground.

During two “successful” weeks they conducted “quite a few” scenarios, “all of which could actually happen in reality with an aircraft. It was a very intense training. We also had a chance to use the new crash tender the Statia fire department received. We also had an opportunity to use the foam, which is especially used for aircraft fires. Everything related to the new crash tender was put to the test during the training,” Tearr said.

The fire personnel were also submitted to physical training as they need to be fit to be a member of the Fire Department. Therefore, the firefighters were trained for the Periodic Preventive Medical Examination (PPMO), which will be taking place in the latter part of the year.

Tearr and Wayne Spanner were the two main instructors of the training, with assistance of shift leaders Wayne Maharaj and Deyns Saladin.
