ST. EUSTATIUS–The island of St. Eustatius rang in the New Year via different avenues. Many persons either chose to go to one of the many churches for the Old Years’ service or to the various New Year’s Eve parties, organized at restaurants and nightclubs or to one of the privately-organized parties.
A planned-fireworks display on New Year’s Eve at Lower Town was cancelled on recommendations of the Fire and Police Departments and harbour officials due to safety measures not being in place. In spite of the cancellation, hundreds headed to Lower Town to party the night away.
At the stroke of midnight, the traditional emergency-vehicle parade took place. A variety of emergency vehicles of the Fire Department, Queen Beatrix Medical Centre and other departments drove around the streets, blaring the lights and horns to announce the New Year. Many persons partied and danced the night away into the early morning hours.
At the Roman Catholic church, pastor Simon Wilson encouraged everyone to be kind to one another in the New Year, “and remember that we are all God’s children and to always seek God’s guidance,” he said. Wilson closed off by wishing everyone a joyous and prosperous New Year.
