PHILIPSBURG–Preparations are in full swing for the first calypso tent of the Carnival season. RAW Promotions Foundation under the auspices of St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation (SCDF) in collaboration with the French St. Martin Carnival Committee FCDSM is organising this event set for Tuesday February 21.
The official opening of Carnival on the North side of the island took place last week Saturday and was followed by the Children’s Candy Parade on Sunday. The Carnival Village in Galisbay, Marigot, will come alive next Tuesday, when calypso fans will have a rare opportunity to see their favourite calypsonians perform in a calypso tent.
Performing will be ten calypsonians: King Beau Beau, The Mighty Phox, Empress Ebony, Lady Righteous, Doctor Ray, Sheera, The Mighty Pepper, The Chipman, His Majesty Baker Jr. and the reigning calypso monarch of St. Maarten, Shakiya.
“It is important to note that this is not a competition, so the artistes are free to put on a show for their fans. The show starts at 8:00pm sharp and will climax early, as the following day is a working day. We want patrons to come out and enjoy the entire show, so we don’t intend to go on too long,” said RAW Promotions Foundation President Fernando Clark.
When asked about his involvement in the show, Clark replied, “I will be the Master of Ceremonies for the evening, so you can expect a lot of laughter and, yes, it is quite possible that I will be singing a song or two, too.”
The calypsonians will be backed by D’Orchestra band, the same band that will provide the musical accompaniment for the eliminations and the finals shows. The entrance fee to the village is US$10 or 10 euros, available at the gate. The show is sponsored by NAGICO and UTS/Chippie.
The next calypso tent is scheduled for March 17.
