COLE BAY–“The winning team” was one of the descriptions used by United St. Maarten Party (US Party) leader Frans Richardson to describe the party in the run-up to the January 9, 2020, snap parliamentary elections.

“This is a small, but big political party,” Richardson said in addressing attendees at the party’s first public meeting held in Cole Bay on Monday evening. “We are a party with a vision and a plan for the country St. Maarten – a party with a future that includes everyone. There is no discriminating, no undermining and we will not forget the small woman and man. We believe in giving people a first and second chance in life. We stand for giving everyone an opportunity. We are not here to tear down each other, but to build each other moving forward.”

He urged the electorate to give the party the mandate to continue the work that it had been doing prior to Hurricane Irma in 2017, and that it is doing now in a coalition government.

Richardson said he is proud of the candidates on the party’s slate. “I listen to my colleagues and listen to their message. This is not about me. The future is here. The future of this country stands here ready to work for you in the country. Give us the opportunity to let us work for you, the people – let us deliver on the things that are affecting you, the people.”

He said the social ills in the country have to be fixed. Alluding to Ministry of Public Housing, Spatial Planning, Environment and Infrastructure VROMI Minister Christopher Wever as being young and energetic, Richardson said the minister continues to do his utmost to “fix” the infrastructure in the country. He stressed that the cleanliness of the country is important.

Former MP and current US Party candidate Romain Laville “is on a mission” and has a vision to bring living wages to workers, he noted. “He has taken up the mantle and he will deliver for you, the people of this country,” Richardson said.

He said the party would continue to do what it has to do despite those who left for greener pastures and are now putting the party in a negative light. “The negative things don’t bother me one bit … [US Party – Ed.] never had an issue before they left and jump. The minute they left and jump the negativity started.”

He stressed that US Party is focused on “the people of this country” and how it can make their lives better. “Give us that opportunity. We have proven over and over again that we can do the job. Yes, we are going through some tough times, but we are building back the country step-by-step and brick-by-brick. They talk about so many issues, but realise that whenever [US Party] is part of anything, the job gets done. This is the winning team. We have never ever lost since 2014 – [US Party] has been steadfast and continues to move forward.”

The party’s team of candidates addressed the audience at the public meeting. Legalising marijuana, animal welfare and the drag strip were amongst the issues raised by #2 candidate Claudius “Toontje” Buncamper in his address.
