CUL DE SAC–Honouring the bounty of the earth and preserving the island’s culture will form part of the first Ital Festival organized by the Freedom Fighters’ Ital Shack for Sunday, February 24, in Emilio Wilson Historical and Cultural Park from 11:00am to 6:00pm.
The festival will feature 100-per-cent vegan foods and drinks. Veganism is a plant-based diet that avoids all animal foods such as meat (including fish, shellfish and insects), dairy, eggs and honey – as well as products like leather and any tested on animals.
Locally-grown vegetables, herbs and fruits as well as other plants will be on sale at the festival.
Organiser Roland “Ras Bushman” Joe said the idea is “to build more consciousness in the people about what we are eating. Rastas have been talking about ital for years now. Now, they make it vegan, but for me it’s the same thing.”
A line-up of positive speakers will share their insights at the festival on culture, planting, food security and taking care of the environment. Guest speakers are retired Police Major John Roumou who will talk about heritage and culture, Tasheena Maccow Thomas of local company Tee-Zan, Mervyn Butcher of the Livestock and Agriculture Inspection Department, and Ras Elijah, who is a farmer on Anguilla. The speakers’ presentations will start at 1:00pm, and each will last about 20 minutes.
“It is just a cultural event to bring people together for more consciousness. It will be a really positive event,” Ras Bushman said.
Entrance to the festival is free. Spaces are available for more vendors. To secure one, call Ras Bushman for more details on +1 721 523 7861.
