CAY HILL–Patients in need of medical services dealing with the function and disorders of their urinary system, can now seek urology care at St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC)

SMMC announced on Thursday that it has expanded its medical services to include urology. As of Monday, August 7, SMMC will have Dr. Diego Ramos operating as a full-time Urologist. Patients will be able to visit the doctor for polyclinic, starting Monday. Ramos has 14 years of experience in urology, urological surgery and endoscopy. He studied and obtained his degrees in general surgery and urology at Central University of Venezuela and at University of Los Andes.

He has also worked for numerous years at Margarita Hospital on Isla de Margarita, in Venezuela. He is also a certified surgeon and brings his specialty of non-invasive laser treatments for kidney and bladder stones to the hospital. Ramos is the first, full-time urologist to be employed at SMMC. In the past, patients in need of treatment by an urologist were referred to French, St. Martin or off island.

“With the start of this specialty at SMMC patients now have the comfort of receiving treatment within the facility with state-of-the-art equipment,” SMMC said in a press release on Thursday.

Ramos described joining SMMC as representing “a new beginning for me. I am happy to be here where I can dedicate my services and expertise to the patient population of St. Maarten. I have brought with me not only my knowledge, but also new laser equipment that will contribute greatly to the quality care of the patients. I look forward to this new journey here on St. Maarten; it is a personal challenge, but I do believe that this is going to be a positive step.”
