MARIGOT–The Bishop of the Diocese of Guadeloupe, the Right Reverend Jean-Yves Riocreux, and the Catholic Parish of St. Martin of Tours in St. Martin confirm the passing of the Reverend Father Charles Cornelius in Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe, on Saturday, April 27.

A funeral vigil will be held at the Roman Catholic Church in Marigot from 5:30 to 10:00pm Sunday, May 5. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated in the Marigot Catholic Church at 10:00am Monday, May 6, preceded by the viewing of the body from 8:00 to 9:45am. Interment follows at the Grand Case cemetery.

Those who wish to pay official tributes to the late Father Charles during the Sunday vigil are requested to register their names at the parish office in Marigot from 9:00am to 2:00pm today, Friday.

Father Cornelius Charles was born in Saint Lucia on September 16, 1946. In 1962 he entered the monastery of Notre-Dame in Schoelcher (Martinique) and from 1966 to 1968 the monastery of Keur Moussa in Senegal. He completed his theological training in Freiburg, Switzerland, between 1969 and 1975.

He was ordained as a priest in Martinique in 1987 and in 1985 served the parish of Vauclin, Martinique. From 1986 to 2000 he served as Pastor of the parish of St. Martin. His mission on arriving in 1986 was to look after the churches in Marigot, French Quarter and Grand Case, and specifically to oversee the rebuilding of the church in Grand Case.

He was ordained as a chief priest in the Diocese of Basse-Terre and Pointe-à-Pitre in 1992. From 2000 to 2017 he was resident in Grand Case. In recent years he had suffered a stroke, but remained sound of mind. Following Hurricane Irma in 2017 he was transferred to the Sacré-Coeur senior citizens’ home in Basse Terre, Guadeloupe. He passed away in hospital in Guadeloupe on April 27.
