GEBE says copper theft delays restoration works

PHILIPSBURG–Utilities company GEBE said on Monday that its scheduled restoration works is moving along as teams have been working around the clock to restore power to areas still without power.

The company said it is now, however, faced with several challenges in some areas as persons in some districts have been stealing the company’s material. On Monday, December 18, it was reported to the company that material was stolen from the work site in Nazareth and cables were also set on fire in Spring Garden.

GEBE urges the community to help them by being vigilant. “If you see someone who you suspect is not an NV GEBE personnel tampering with the company’s property, please call our call centre … and report [it – Ed.],” GEBE urged.

The call centre can be reached at tel. 546-1100, 546-1127, 546-1160, 546-1189 and 544-3100. GEBE said the continued theft of its property can lead to more delays in the restoration process.

GEBE said last week that water supply has been restored to all areas in the country and electricity has been restored to an estimated 90 per cent of the population. The company hopes to have electricity fully restored to all households by December 23. The company had said at the time that its personnel and local contractors have been working around the clock to ensure that all districts are powered up and supplied with water.
