GEBE to get a new board | THE DAILY HERALD

PHILIPSBURG–Utilities company GEBE will be getting an entirely new Supervisory Board of Directors (SBOD), not just one board member to replace the late Roy Marlin, who passed away earlier this year, as was reported on Thursday.

The office of Minister of Public Housing, Spatial Planning, Environment and Infrastructure VROMI Miklos Giterson said on Friday that the “sitting term of the most recent board of NV GEBE has expired and the process to appoint a new board is currently ongoing. Once this process has been finalised, the minister will publicly release the relevant information to the media.”

The minister’s office had said on Thursday, when asked about this specifically, that a candidate was being screened to replace Marlin on the board, but did not disclose that a completely new board would be put in place as the term of the most recent board had come to an end. The minister’s office said it had to be “very mindful” of the information it provides, especially when it pertains to matters of a sensitive nature.

“It is our job to be discreet with information that is not yet ready for public consumption,” the minister’s office said.

In a letter dated May 30, Giterson addressed the ending of the board’s term and thanked them for their service.

“As your term comes to an end, the government of St. Maarten would like to thank you for your dedication and commitment to service on the SBOD,” Giterson said in the letter.

“This term has not been an easy one, as the country was devastated by Hurricane Irma with far-reaching effects on the company’s network and finances. The board has also had to deal with the sudden illness and passing of a dear member, Roy Marlin, whose dedication to the SBOD is also appreciated. We wish you much success in all your future endeavours.”

It could not be ascertained whether GEBE is currently operating without a board or whether the board whose term has expired is still functioning pending the appointment of a new board.

Other members of the board whose term has expired are Bienvenido Richardson, Agnes Monte, Sandy Offringa, Patrice Gumbs, Oral Gibbes and Tadzio Bervoets.
