OYSTER POND–Police patrols, ambulance and Fire Department officials were sent to Scallop Shell Road in Oyster Pond on Tuesday afternoon to investigate a fire that started at a transformer belonging to utilities company GEBE.
Police spokesman Chief Inspector Ricardo Henson said an employee of GEBE who was working at that location had suffered burns to his hands.
“The fire in question spread quickly and grew into a large bush fire which threatened several homes in the area. The injured worker was treated on the scene and taken by ambulance to St. Maarten Medical Center for further treatment,” he said.
The fire was quickly brought under control by the Fire Department. The exact cause of the fire is still unclear.
The victim suffered second degree burns to both hands and elbows. His condition is stable and his injuries are not life-threatening.
