Gendarmes fine scooter riders breaking the law

MARIGOT–Gendarmes issued fines and seized six scooters on Thursday during an operation targeting two-wheeled vehicles being used in contravention of the Highway Code.

Some 20 Gendarmes and a unit from the Territorial Police held controls in Concordia, Marigot, between 4:00pm and 6:00pm.

Fines issued were for the following infractions: one for a repeat offence of having an invalid driving licence and no insurance; one for outrage directed at a law enforcement officer; three for no technical control inspection certificate; one for not wearing a crash helmet; one for an invalid registration card.

Additionally, six scooters were confiscated from their operators for failure to present insurance and for not being in conformity with laws in place for use on the public roads.

The Gendarmerie indicated it is also cracking down on the nuisance factor of noise from scooters and excessive speed.

These controls will be repeated in all areas of St. Martin and St. Barths.
