MARIGOT–In a statement released Saturday evening, President Daniel Gibbs said he is, and has been since Thursday, in direct contact with Minister of Overseas Territories Annick Girardin regarding the crisis on the French side, to notify her of the main demands which require an urgent response.
In his communication to the minister he requested: “Proceed to the immediate withdrawal of the anticipated [natural risk prevention plan – Ed.] PPRN version of August 6, 2019, and return to the 2011 PPRN regulations. Extra time is necessary to rewrite a PPRN project befitting the social, economic and cultural reality of the territory.
“I wish to remind you of the will of my elected representatives and myself, who have lived through [Hurricane – Ed.] Irma, to guarantee the protection of our population residing throughout the territory against a new type of natural disaster, including the coastal area.”
Gibbs stated he and his elected officials will only agree to a PPRN designed in a rigorous and concerted manner, taking into account the inhabitants of St. Martin, their lifestyles and the preservation of economic activity.
He also asked the minister to install “a new State representative in St. Martin” and requested security of St. Martiners, restoration of social order and public safety.
He reiterated the will of the Collectivité to move forward more resolutely in taking over the environment competence from the State, “so that St. Martin is able to be in control of its future.”
