Some honourees with Governor Eugene Holiday.
PELICAN–Governor Eugene Holiday singled out a number of organisations, in observance of King’s Day, “to highlight all invaluable service rendered to the people of St. Maarten in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma.”
An award of appreciation was presented to 22 organisations in four categories during the King’s Day reception at Simpson Bay Beach Resort on Thursday. In his speech, Holiday said a lot of time had been put into selecting the organisations and arriving at the list “has not been an easy task and we recognise that this list is not complete.”
He hopes the recognition will serve as an inspiration for all “to continue to do the work necessary to help our country recover from the effects of Hurricane Irma.”
Recognised in the category Disaster Management were the Ambulance Service, Department of Communication, Royal Dutch Marines CZMCARIB, Fire Department, water and electricity company GEBE, Police Force, St. Maarten Telephone Group of Companies TelEm, Ministry of Infrastructure and Ministry of Public Health, Social Development and Labour.
For Social Care, recognised were Home Away from Home Foundation, K1 Britannia Foundation, National Institute for Professional Advancement (NIPA), the Red Cross, St. Maarten Medical Center, Tzu Chi Foundation, and White and Yellow Cross Care Foundation.
For Education and Emotional Care, those recognised were Dow’s Musical Foundation, National Institute of Arts (NIA), Voice of Our Youth St. Maarten and teachers, represented by Glenderlin Holiday.
In the area of communication, Holiday recognised radio stations Laser 101 and St. Maarten Radio Network PJD2. He said they were “critical in channelling information to residents and concerned family and friends overseas and to the rest of the world about the situation in St. Maarten.”
He dedicated a “Symbol of Resilience” plaque to the people of St. Maarten to symbolise the final category: “Our Community.”
“As a people we have as our foundation a legacy of beating the odds, survival, and resilience. That legacy along with strong family ties, unity and jollification has gotten us through Donna in 1960, Luis in 1995 and Irma and Maria in 2017,” he said.
“It is with great pleasure and pride that I, in acknowledgement of that legacy, dedicate this plaque to the people of St. Maarten: That In recognition of the resilience and immense strength in response to Hurricane Irma.”
Prime Minister Leona Romeo-Marlin received the plaque from the Governor, who requested that she give it a place in the public area of the Government Administration Building.
