Govt. grants half-day off to women civil servants | THE DAILY HERALD

POND ISLAND–In celebration of International Women’s Day today, Friday, government has granted all women civil servants a half-day off starting from 1:00pm where the function permits.

The public should be aware that due to the gender composition of some ministries, service-oriented departments might close at 1:00pm, said government.

A quick scan of the civil service corps indicates that women account for almost 60 per cent of the government workforce.

According to a government press statement, the Council of Ministers “saw it fit to offer time off as a reasonable compensation on this special day. Productivity and innovation throughout Government remains a top priority and a healthy, energised and motivated civil service corps is key to achieving the strategic objectives as outlined.”

Government “recognises the importance of the invaluable contribution female civil servants continue to offer to the government and people.”

Government encourages all women to support the events on the Women’s Desk calendar for the “Womanity Fest” that runs from March 8 to April 13. Events include a 1,000 Women March on March 9, Prominent Women Gala Dinner and Award, and SXM Women Strong expo.

Everyone in the community is urged by government to set aside time on March 8 to recognise and appreciate the women in their lives.

Government has taken note that International Men’s Day will be celebrated on November 19 and a similar recognition will be decided on as the date draws near.
