Grenades, guns found on boats

The intercepted vessels.

WILLEMSTAD–The Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard intercepted four speedboats in cooperation with Curaçao Customs on Tuesday. There were eight persons – all Venezuelan nationals – on board, as well as several firearms with ammunition and two hand grenades.  The radar operator of the Rescue and Coordination Centre detected the suspicious vessels near the Spanish Water around 2:00pm. A Super-RHIB from the support centre Curaçao was immediately dispatched to the designated spot and found the four boats, one of which was being towed. The crew of the Super-RHIB went aboard and after an investigation found the guns, bullets and grenades. The occupants have all been arrested.

The vessels were towed and brought to the naval base at Parera. The suspects along with the ammunition and weapons were handed over to the Police Force.

Information-driven actions and data-sharing with the chain partners, in this case specifically with Customs, led to this weapon capture, stated a Coast Guard release. The matter is under further investigation.
