PHILIPSBURG–The Elektralyets Foundation, Positive Foundation,  Women’s Desk and Posh Production have teamed up and will be hosting a number of events in March under the banner “WomanityFest” for International Women’s Day 2019, which will be observed on March 8.

The goal of WomanityFest is to unite as many women, women’s organisations, clubs, foundations and business professionals s as possible to celebrate International Women’s Day and month. “Women are the building pillars of this community and it is wonderful that a day has been dedicated to celebrate and empower women and girls of all walks of life on Sint Maarten,” it was stated in a press release issued over the weekend.

Activities for WomanityFest will include an International Women’s Day Glitz and Glam- Women of Worth (WOW) Social at Holland House Beach Hotel on March 8, from 6:00pm to 10:00pm. This event will feature an opening cocktail party, speeches, networking and entertainment. The dress code will be “shades of purple” and entrance will be free.

On March 9, an empowerment workshop, themed “Four Faces of Women,” will be held at Belair Community Center from 2:00pm to 5:00pm. Sister Devki of Bhrama Kumaris will facilitate the session. This will be followed by the 1,000 Women’s Unity March, hosted by Posh Productions. On March 31, a Hats, Heels and Clutches Brunch/Lunch will be held. Details of this and other activities will be announced later.

“In line with the theme for International Women’s Day, we want to raise the glass ceiling and do something extra special for the women of our community. After the devastations of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, many women had to pull together to feed, nurture, and help with the rebuilding processes of our country,” Elektralyets Foundation President Mercedes “Elektra” Wyatt said.

“Bringing women together to help empower each other for the future we all face, shows resilience, fortitude and commitment, not only to ourselves but to our  nation and country “Oualichi” land of many women  as given to us by our ancestors. It’s only fitting that we continue to uplift and uphold our name sake, she said. We want to pay homage to strong- spirited women like “One Tete Loke,” pioneers in various fields of professionalism.”

Positive Foundation President Shelly Alphonso, Posh Productions Director Anna Richardson and Women’s Desk representative Elencia Baptiste-Boasman are excited to be part of this initiative. An initial contact meeting was held with a few other women’s organizations, such as SXM Women Strong and Safe Haven.

The theme for this year’s United Nations International Women’s Day is “Think equal, build smart, innovate for change.” The theme will focus on innovative ways to advance gender equality and the empowerment of women, particularly in the areas of social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure. “The future is exciting.

Let’s build a gender-balanced world. Everyone has a part to play all the time, everywhere. From grassroots activism to worldwide action, we are entering an exciting period of history where the world expects balance. We notice its absence and celebrate its presence. Balance drives a better working world,” it was stated in the release.
