PHILIPSBURG–The Minister of Public Housing, Spatial Planning, Environment and Infrastructure VROMI Chris Wever, Utilities Company GEBE Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Kenrick Chittick, GEBE Distribution Manager Patrick Drijvers and GEBE Water Department employees officially opened the valve at the water storage tank in Guana Bay on Friday, November 22, to release the water into the grid. This tank, which now holds 1,500 cubic metres of water, was destroyed by Hurricane Irma in 2017.
“Because of Hurricane Irma, NV GEBE’s water grid suffered immensely with the damage to nine tanks. However, once this tank goes into service, this would alleviate water issues in Guana Bay, Oyster Pond and surrounding areas,” said Chittick during a small ceremony to mark the occasion.
Drijvers said this is the fifth water storage tank that has been repaired since Hurricane Irma and GEBE is still working on ensuring that all tanks are repaired.
At the ceremony, Wever thanked GEBE for its dedication, commitment and promise to reduce water issues in St. Maarten.
GEBE’s storage capacity previously stood at a day-and-a-half and with the repair of existing tanks and construction of the other tanks in the near future, the water storage will stand at four days, said GEBE in a press release on Monday.
