~ Nominations set for Wednesday night ~
PHILIPSBURG–The St. Maarten Guyanese Association (SMGA) is calling for nominations as it prepares to hold an election for a new board on August 29.
SMGA President Malcolm Mickle said persons wishing to run for office must be registered members with dues paid up for the year (January to August) and must have supported or attended at least three events hosted by the association in the election year, which started in October 2017.
Mickle stressed that elections will be held among those candidates nominated during a general meeting at the 158B Back Street office in Philipsburg at 7:30pm Wednesday, August 23. Nominees must have a good reputation in the community and only eligible voters will receive a ballot paper.
Mickle is encouraging all Guyanese to turn out and make their vote count, as the association’s board stands ready to represent all residents who share Guyanese heritage.
SMGA was formed in 2015 after the St. Maarten Guyanese Foundation led by the late Courtney Gibson fell dormant. Its first board comprised Neville Mars as president, now Honorary Consul Cleveland Beresford as treasurer, and George Mars as Secretary.
Today, the board is made up of President Mickle, Interim Vice-President Maureen Fortune, Treasurer Mark Daniels, Assistant Treasurer George Mars, Secretary Aiesha Daniels, Assistant Secretary Sharon Layne, Public Relations Officer Kim Lucas-Felix, Assistant Public Relations Officer Milton Pieters, and members Vanessa Fraser (events coordinator), Joshua Schwiers, Bernard Inniss and Colin Morris.
The purpose of the association, as outlined in its constitution, is to look after its members’ legal, moral, cultural, social, economic and general interest. The association seeks to attain these objectives through helping with integration into the St. Maarten community and providing support for its members in areas of need.
