MARIGOT–A number of young people from Association Sandy Ground on the Move Insertion have obtained certification to operate certain types of heavy equipment and machinery. Two of them were presented a press conference in the district council office on Wednesday.
Kerry Sillier, Gerry Lake and Kelvin Joseph were the successful candidates, although Joseph could not be present and was represented by Calvin Liburd. The course was given by training centre Fore IDN from August 5 to 13, lasting 42 hours, and included theory and practical segments.
The candidates were certified in categories 2 and 4, which are the lighter types of vehicles, small backhoes or caterpillar-type diggers that work on the roads. Other categories correspond to the weight, size, and what the vehicle is used for.
“It was a very good opportunity for us and I’m very grateful,” said Lake.
Sandy Ground on the Move Insertion President Georges Richardson said the association takes the initiative to make these courses available for young people in difficulties to help them secure employment and better prospects for the future.
“This is a second chance for a lot of young people,” said Richardson. “Having done these courses, they leave our association in a better position than when they came in. To progress in life and go further, you do need to have the necessary schooling and skills. These young people have shown that they have the motivation and desire to succeed. They are the future of our country, so they must have the tools to succeed, and I know that they will inspire other young people to do the same.” Richardson thanked Fore IDN for its collaboration with the association, noting the training centre plays a major role in helping associations. He also thanked the State for its contribution with funding.
