Reconstruction and repairs to the old St. Joseph Convent School are ongoing on Front Street. The upper part of the structure was wiped out by Hurricane Irma on September 6, 2017.
The privately owned monument housed the Tommy Hilfiger store prior to the hurricane. Before that it was home to Sister Marie Laurence Primary School until 1994. The original building was constructed by sisters of the Dominican Order who established their school in 1890. It worked as a boarding school until 1923.
The sisters not only founded the school, they also created the country’s first hospital – St. Rose Hospital, and the senior citizens home.
