BELVEDERE–Eighteen children age seven to 15 picked up a stick and participated in a free field hockey training at the Cruyff Court in Belvedere Saturday. Organized by the St. Maarten Hockey Club, the clinic was designed to stir interest in the sport.
“The clinic was well received and we will continue doing free trainings on the pitch on Saturdays from 3 to 4:30 pm starting September 10,” said Paul Dijkhoffz of the Club’s Youth Hockey Committee.
The training began with a briefing on safety and stick handling. Six members of the Hockey Club were on hand to help show the young athletes how to dribble the ball, pass and shoot. The clinic concluded with a practice match.
After the clinic the children were invited to Soggy Dollar that evening for free pizza from Dominos and a chance to win one of three prizes donated by Klass Electronics.
The weekly training scheduled to start in September and continue throughout the school year is free and open to all. Sticks will be provided.
The hockey program is made possible by Soggy Dollar, PDG, Orco Bank, Ballerina Jewellers, Lexwell, Antek, Domino’s and The Daily Herald.
