PHILIPSBURG–Government will be starting the new hospitality courses on February 18 as part of the Emergency Income Skills Training programme funded through the World Bank Trust Fund under the umbrella of the Ministry of Public Health, Social Development and Labour VSA.
The programme offers unemployed and underemployed persons the opportunity to acquire new skills and upgrade skills within the hospitality sector. The courses are free of charge and, once successfully completed, participants receive internationally accredited certification. The hospitality training programme is managed by the St. Maarten Training Foundation.
The new available courses are Hospitality 360 and a Culinary Arts programme. The course offering is unique for St. Maarten in the hospitality sector, providing a complete set of skill-set development for the students.
Lee said on Wednesday, “We’ve started to see already that participants in the previous courses were successfully graduating and moving on. They are returning to full-time employment, which I think is again a very positive story. The feedback from the employers has been extremely positive, stating that they see the results of the training programme in terms of productivity and skill-sets that the workers are returning with.”
The Hospitality 360 course is designed to enhance knowledge, skills and attitude in hospitality operations in accordance with industry standards. It covers core competencies on cleaning bar areas, operating a bar, preparing and mixing of cocktails, providing a link between kitchen and service areas, providing room service, providing food and beverage service, developing and updating of food and beverage knowledge, and providing wine services.
The Culinary Arts course is designed to enhance the knowledge, skills and attitude in preparing and cooking hot and cold sauces, dressings and desserts. It also includes competencies in workplace communication, teamwork, personal hygiene, safety in the use of hand tools and equipment, and good housekeeping.
Persons who are interested in developing or upgrading their hospitality skills and enrolling for the courses can enquire via the Department of Labour Affairs. Bring a valid ID. Qualifying participants will receive an allowance with medical insurance.
The Emergency Income Skills Training programme was originally funded by government and transitioned into a World Bank-funded project.
