SIMPSON BAY–Insurance Company of the West Indies (ICWI) has made it possible for St. Maarten Vocational Training School (SMVTS) to host a Christmas lunch for its students on December 15, by donating an undisclosed amount to the school for this purpose.
According to a press release, ICWI did not hesitate when asked to support the school to host its annual Christmas lunch. ICWI Branch Manager Dwight Cunningham visited the school and spoke with Director Rita Bourne-Gumbs and some teachers.
Bourne-Gumbs said she had been concerned about the school, which faces many challenges. However, she was very happy to receive help from the business community in these hard times.
Given the challenges St. Maarten and students have had to face this past year, the school wanted to do something special this holiday season, offering students a chance to enjoy the spirit of Christmas with their schoolmates. Many students suffered great losses due to the passing of Hurricane Irma and teachers wanted to ensure that the spirit of Christmas was at the school.
Music teacher Donavan Lynch showed a lot of passion helping the students develop their talents, which will be showcased during the Christmas celebration. Social studies teacher Vannessa Gustina has also been busy coordinating the Christmas lunch.
Cunningham “is happy” to contribute to the school and “looks forward to hopefully working more closely with the school on future projects that will make the education process for the students and teachers at the school even more positive,” the release said.
