‘In Irma’s Wake’ exhibit at The Art Box Gallery

001-1

COLE BAY–Hot on the heels of March’s opening exhibition at The Art Box Gallery’s new location in Cole Bay, April Hankins will be this month’s featured artist in her first public exhibition in St. Maarten. The solo exhibition will be opened Thursday, April19, 5:00pm to 7:00pm.

Hankins will be presenting a body of work in the form of installations – an artist’s impression created in the wake of the savage and life-changing few hours of Hurricane Irma.

Her work finds beauty in pieces salvaged from the storm – destruction reconstructed into works of art, collector’s pieces that reflect a poignant moment in time.
“This work is a product of the storm, a terrible beauty and a bit of healing. Some of the debris was so sadly ugly that I wanted to see how I could enhance it to reveal that it still has value,” Hankins said of her post-Irma pieces.

Alongside Hankins’ post-hurricane work, “In Irma’s Wake” will feature paintings, prints and drawings that have been described as abstract work that is loosely improvisational, strong in colour, and adventurous in mark and gesture.

This accomplished artist, who studied at the Yale School of Art and has work in the museum collections at Yale and Harvard Universities, lived, travelled and exhibited in New York City, San Francisco and Paris before moving to St. Maarten three years ago.
Hankins has numerous awards to her name, as well as a print collection and paintings hanging in numerous prestigious public and corporate bodies.

In Irma’s Wake is the second of a series of monthly events, and the first solo artist exhibition, at The Art Box Gallery, home of Zdenka West Indies Jewellery at Welfare Road 89A.
