Group photo WILLEMSTAD--Seven prisoners at “Sentro di Detenshon i Korekshon Korsou” (SDKK) in Curaçao successfully completed a three-month professional tile-laying course, earning certificates that will help prepare them for employment after their release.
Putting training into practice
The lessons of SDKK's Education, Training and Development Department OVT were taught by instructor Randy Emelina of “Fundashon di Fundeshi te Dak.” According to SDKK, the programme is part of its ongoing efforts to expand vocational education opportunities for inmates. The objective is to equip participants with practical skills that improve their prospects in the labour market and support their successful reintegration into society. During the training, detainees learnt how to measure, cut and install floor and wall tiles, properly use professional tools and master the theoretical knowledge required for the trade. In addition to technical skills, the course emphasised personal development by fostering teamwork, discipline, responsibility and commitment – qualities considered essential for future employment. Management said the successful completion of this programme reinforces its belief that education and vocational training are among the most effective tools for providing inmates with new opportunities, encouraging personal growth and preparing them for life after incarceration. The correctional institute added that every new skill a prisoner acquires represents an investment in both the individual and society, increasing the likelihood of a successful return to the community following release.
