CAY HILL–“I am SXM” – an event mirrored on the popular international TED Talk series – will be hosted by International Kids Community Service Club today, Monday, in the Learning Unlimited Preparatory School gym.

The talk will feature two prominent St. Maarteners – Member of Parliament Sarah Wescot-Williams and Culture and Heritage activist Clara Reyes. The two presenters will share their experience of life on the island. The talk is open to the public and starts at 6:30pm.

The talk is one of the first in what the club has billed as an island-wide campaign to highlight the many faces of the island under the theme “I am SXM.”

“St. Maarten has many faces. Each has a different story to tell, some that may evoke, and others that may provoke. But if you look into their eyes and hear them speak you will find that all of them are the voices of St. Maarten. It takes many voices and stories to make this island and we are here to make sure that they are told,” the club said in a press statement.

The island is home to people from many backgrounds, each having its traditions. This programme will provide a platform for those stories and voices using the vehicles of dialogue, writing, and talks. This way, the club said, “The cultural heritage of the island can be maintained in the present and preserved for the benefit of future generations.”

The club has plans to create videos to document the island’s heritage and will share these via a series of YouTube videos. The children intend to interview people who have lived on the island for generations and those who have made the island their home to hear about their journey, experiences and the changes they have seen on the island over the years they have been here.

They will also record demonstrations of recipes, music, dance and herbal medicines that are native to the island.
