Democratic Party (DP) Councilman Koos Sneek (standing) urging the Island Council to “revise” the Island Ordinance for the issuing of building permits.
ST. EUSTATIUS–The Island Council meeting at Gertrude Judson Bicentennial Public Library was cut short Wednesday because the main agenda point had to be postponed until after New Year. This concerned the Island Ordinance amendments and adjustments to tariffs for the issuing of building permits.
Island Council Member Clyde van Putten of Progressive Labour Party (PLP) had originally tabled the agenda point but removed it from debate since it required “significant” revision.
The Island Council agreed unanimously with this proposal. Koos Sneek of Democratic Party (DP) had already drawn attention to various errors in the calculations included in the Ordinance.
“Opposition is there not just to oppose, but to help the democratic process,” Sneek told The Daily Herald.
Acting Island Governor and Chairman of the Island Council Julian Woodley instructed Commissioners Charles Woodley and Derrick Simmons to “massage” the three-page document “to ensure its clarity.”
PLP Councilwoman Rechelline Leerdam (PLP) did not attend the meeting as she was off-island for medical reasons.
