PHILIPSBURG–National Alliance (NA) leader Member of Parliament (MP) Silveria Jacobs, a former Education Minister, is “grateful” to be recognised by sitting Education Minister Wycliffe Smith for her role in the preparation of the draft national ordinance on study financing, which Smith presented to MPs in a meeting of the Central Committee of Parliament last week Friday.
According to a press release issued on Monday, Smith recognised Jacobs for “trailblazing” the national ordinance on study financing and commended the hardworking staff of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports (ECYS) for their tireless efforts and for keeping it at the forefront, thereby making it possible for the legislation to be handled in Parliament.
Jacobs said during Friday’s meeting that, having worked on the piece of legislation over the past years, there would be no questions from her directed to the minister.
“It is long overdue and required a lot of work and effort from the Division Study Financing and Department of Education’s management and staff, including technical legal experts in the education field,” Jacobs said in the release.
After years of back-and-forth between Legal Affairs and the Ministry of Education, “we are finally so far that this piece of legislation can make its way towards finalisation.”
Jacobs said she was pleased that talented artists and athletes were now recognised in the legislation to be able to be awarded study financing for tertiary education. “Parents and students should be aware of the responsibilities that come along with receiving study financing, so as not to hinder future applicants from receiving study financing,” Jacobs was quoted as saying in the release.
Smith presented the “long awaited” ordinance during Friday’s meeting and explained many of the steps taken to get to this point. The meeting of the Central Committee on the draft law will be reconvened next week for the minister to answer the questions asked during the meeting.
