POND ISLAND–Ahead of Mother’s Day on Sunday, Minister of Education, Culture, Youth, and Sports Silveria Jacobs congratulated mothers and mother figures, and issued a challenge to fathers to do more for their children.
Jacobs said in this week’s the Council of Ministers Press Briefing: “When we have more fathers standing up in their roles, we will see more celebrations.”
Her comments, she noted, were not meant to be slanted towards mothers. “We are not promoting single motherhood, but we have to at least ‘give Jack he jacket and Jill she petticoat’ as they say, if a mother is doing it on her own and doing a great job,” Jacobs said.
St. Maarten/St. Martin celebrates Mother’s Day twice in May. The first coincides with the observance in the United States and the Caribbean, and the other to be celebrated on May 28 this year, is the same as in France.
“We have the privilege to celebrate Mother’s Day twice; fathers are quite jealous,” said Jacobs, who also acknowledged that some fathers also pay both parental roles.
“All organisations that fill in for mothers were also saluted by Jacobs. The youth are referred to as the future, but the care and attention given to them now make an impression,” she said.
