Silveria Jacobs
PHILIPSBURG–Prime Minister Silveria Jacobs said on Wednesday that there are several “key” positions in government that are vacant and she urged qualified St. Maarteners to apply for them before the funds budgeted for these posts are no longer available.
She said there are “gaps” in civil service and this is an opportunity for qualified St. Maarteners to explore becoming “active agents” in the change “we want to see.”
“There are several vacancies that are open and if we don’t fill them in timely fashion they will be cut from the budget,” Jacobs told reporters on Wednesday. This is the reality of our situation with limited liquidity. We must be able to fill needed positions with qualified [persons – Ed.],” she said, issuing an appeal to St. Maarteners in the diaspora to look at what is available and take steps to “make that contribution.”
The issue of personnel shortages was highlighted during a “quick meeting” held to become acquainted with department heads. “It was a quick meeting, but in that meeting across the board, practically all departments, there was an issue with personnel. Some had sector heads that were missing. For sure, I know that there are at least three sector heads or department heads [missing],” she said.
The National Recovery Programme Bureau (NRPB) also has about 14 vacancies and there are vacancies at the Department of Home Affairs and Kingdom Relations BAK. Jacobs said she will request that the various websites be updated so the public can be aware of the vacancies that exist.
She said difficulties would be encountered in executing certain planned projects related to the country’s recovery if several vacant “key” positions are not filled. “We need to get these positions filled to carry out projects that need to be carried out in collaboration with government.”
She also issued an appeal to government organisations to not drag their heels on this issue.
