MARIGOT–Marigot’s Jean-Louis Vanterpool Stadium is expected to be inaugurated with its new sports hall in September 2018 when repairs are completed, the Collectivité estimated.
Rehabilitation of the stadium had already been planned since 2016 for an amount of 2.8 million euros, as part of the rehabilitation of all sports infrastructures in the territory. The work was not completed when Hurricane Irma struck the island in September 2017, but fortunately only 30 per cent of the roof of the new covered hall was damaged.
Aware of the importance of sports activities for the population in general and young people in particular, the Collectivité quickly carried out repairs in the stadium so that it could welcome young people for practicing sport as soon as possible. A good decision, as the covered sports hall of this complex was delivered at the beginning of July 2018 in time to welcome children registered for “Ticket Sport” during the month.
With regard to the stadium’s football field adjacent to the hall, there is still work to be done to repair the bleachers and the roof, and to repair an emergency door. This work is scheduled to take approximately 10 weeks and will be completed by the end of August 2018. For this specific work, the local government received an emergency fund of 252,000 euros from the National Centre for Sport Development CNDS.
Jean-Louis Vanterpool stadium complex includes a covered indoor sports hall as well as a football field, changing rooms, showers and sanitary facilities. It will shortly be operational to welcome schools from all over the Marigot sector, as well as the Cité Scolaire in La Savane, for sports associations and clubs for the practice of their disciplines.
The new complex with its sports hall, considered as one of the best equipped of all the islands of the Caribbean should be inaugurated early in September 2018. One downside, however, is that the stadium will not yet be able to accommodate sports associations at night. The refurbishment of the football field lighting is scheduled for late 2018, early 2019; 300,000 euros programmed in another budget has been set aside for this work.
