PHILIPSBURG–The Ultimate God Conspiracy is the title of the first thriller by semi-retired journalist Hilbert Haar. It will be tentatively released on Tuesday, January 15. The story is about journalist Robert Millner and his ill-fated quest to prove that God does not exist and that religion is a centuries-old conspiracy.
Driven to the brink of insanity by his wife Mary who fell victim to Alzheimer’s disease at a relatively young age, Millner gets entangled in a fatal debate with his foster-father Sam Goldsmith about the existence of The Creator.
When he accepts Sam’s challenge to prove that there is no God, he soon becomes the target of a murderous organisation that is prepared to protect the secret pages of the Codex Argenteus – the Silver Bible – at any price.
The turbulent chain of events triggered by his research turns Millner’s life completely upside down and puts everyone who is dear to him at risk. But will he find the proof he is looking for?
Although this is certainly not the author’s intention, the story has the potential to insult the Prophet Mohammed, the Pope, the Archbishop of Greece and a handful of Orthodox Jews, it was stated in a press release about Haar’s book.
Haar (1950) started working as a journalist in the Netherlands in 1969. He has worked for newspaper and magazine publishers and as an independent writer with his own company.
He spent seven years in Greece on the island of Crete and lived also briefly in Utah and California in the United States. He worked as the editor-in-chief at Today newspaper in St. Maarten for 10-plus years, until the paper closed down after Hurricane Irma in 2017.
Haar is currently traveling with his wife Myriam in Asia, where he has just finished his first full-length thriller. Asked about how he would characterize The Ultimate God Conspiracy, Haar said it is an action thriller, but first of all about unconditional love.
“My main character loses the love of his life to Alzheimer’s and then he gets into a discussion with his foster-father about the existence of God. When he begins to investigate the matter, all hell breaks loose and things start going from bad to worse. It’s a real page-turner,” Haar said in an interview with E-book publisher Smashwords.
The author, who published Bakersfield Bananas, a collection of 24 short stories, in 2012, is currently contemplating the topic for his next book.
“I’m done with religion, though in the future I could still write a sequel. That’s up in the air right now. I am researching mind-control programmes to figure out whether this would work for my next thriller. I want my books to be entertaining, yet they also have to make my readers think about all kinds of stuff. That’s why you’ll find, for instance, passages about racial issues in The Ultimate God Conspiracy,” said Haar.
The Ultimate God Conspiracy is currently available at smashwords.com, Apple Bookstore, Barnes & Noble and Kobo. A future release at Amazon.com is in the works.
