Large amount of cash seized from family

 

AIRPORT–A man B.F.G. who was travelling off-island with his wife and two children on Friday were subjected to a search during a routine control conducted by the Alpha Team at Princess Juliana International Airport SXM.

According to police, a large sum of money was discovered during this control, divided among the family members’ bags. The discovered cash was in excess of the legal limit of US $10,000 per person and was not declared to the Customs officials.

The money was confiscated by order of the prosecutor and an investigation was launched. No arrests were made at the time.

The Alpha Team is a multidisciplinary group comprising members of the local Police Force, the Immigration Department, the Royal Marechaussees and the Customs Department.

Since the recent installation of the police substation at the Airport, travellers will notice an increase in police visibility and routine police controls. These controls are specifically carried out in efforts to curb and prevent all illegal acts that can be committed at the Airport and to ensure the overall safety for travellers.
