PHILIPSBURG–The radiothon hosted by radio station Laser 101 at the parking lot of Philipsburg Jubilee Library on Saturday has yielded NAf. 32,000, the Library announced Sunday.
The library, which is celebrating its 95th anniversary, has been in dire straits since the devastating hurricane season of 2017 and the subsequent looting of laptops and tablets. Only 12 per cent of the library building can be used currently. A small collection of the books is still available, and the Internet Café is open, but some other services have been discontinued. Many books have been disposed of and some 8,000 titles have been lost.
The library, St. Maarten National Heritage Foundation, which manages St. Maarten Museum, and St. Maarten Archaeological Centre Foundation SIMARC signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the objective to build a joint new state-of-the-art building for a National Heritage and Knowledge Centre.
The library seeks to raise some NAf. 100,000 to get back on its feet again. The six-hour Laser 101 radiothon, which was from 10:00am to 4:00pm, has yielded approximately one third of the amount.
Saturday’s donations were made by members of the general public, businesses and organisations, both in cash and in cheques. Funds were also raised from the sales of food and drinks at the library’s parking lot.
The public can make donations to the library’s bank account at Windward Islands Bank (WIB) #871711-07 (NAf.)
