SUCKER GARDEN–Dr. J Foundation, run by seasoned clinical psychologist Dr. Judith Arndell who runs a newly established rehabilitation home in Sucker Garden, is on track and was visited by Minister of Social Affairs VSA Emil Lee and his staff on Thursday afternoon. Lee was treated to a tour along with members of the media.

The new shelter will be operated at a cost of NAf. 1.8 million, houses 34 persons presently and has the capacity to go up to 63 persons. The home is not a shelter, but works with the client to get him or her back into society, according to Arndell. Family duplexes and studios are available at the facility.

“We want to make it comfortable for clients to get back on their feet and give them the tools to go back into the community, but we don’t want it to be too comfortable, because the idea is not for the clients and those in need to stay for a long period of time,” stated Arndell.

The shelter is equipped with a minimum of three washer-and-dryer facilities and will have a facility manager, administrative workers, social workers, chefs, cleaners and 24/7 security on premises.

“The clients have to stick to our rules. Once they do not stick to the rules, they are asked to leave. There is no room for error for our programme.
“Each social worker is assigned a family and works with them closely. We pay attention to everything. We observe and assist where we can.

“It is also important to clear up that residents who stay at the home do not pay rent, they pay an allowance that is kept and saved on behalf of the client. Once the person is ready to leave, they are given the funds back to help with furniture, deposit for an apartment etc.,” she said.

Lee said he is happy that authorities are able to provide a decent living solution for persons in the community who were impacted by Hurricane Irma and is satisfied with what he has seen this far.
