PHILIPSBURG–St. Maarten South Leo Club collaborated with Fundashon Korsow Uni in a “Fresh and Cool” back-to-school project on Sunday, August 11.

The project entailed providing backpacks filled with school supplies and giving haircuts and hairdos to boys and girls ages 6-12 at the St. Martin of Tours Parish hall in Philipsburg. In total 56 children went to their first day of school with freshly done hair.

“It was great to see smiles on the children’s faces as we assisted them in preparing to look fresh and cool for the start of the 2019-2020 schoolyear,” said St. Maarten South Leo Club in a press release.

The club also said this is just one of the many initiatives it has planned for the year.

The club expressed its gratitude to persons and businesses that assisted in the project.

“We would like to thank the following persons for their assistance with this project. It could not have been success without them, and for that, we are truly grateful: I.C.E., with their generous donation we were able to purchase the school bags; volunteer braiders Teresa Roberts, Everlyne ‘Ebonny Empress’ Walters, Deidra Williams and Kishaya McCalla, who had given the girls their beautiful hairstyles; the barbers that skilfully gave the boys their haircuts; Malia Engelhart, for her generous donation of the backpack that we raffled to a lucky student; Fundashon Korsow Uni, for allowing us to join them on the task of providing the kids a great start to the school year; and the St. Maarten Lions Club for their continuous support in our endeavours.”

St. Maarten South Leo Club wishes all students and pupils a successful 2019-2020 schoolyear.
