Leonald Conner PTF advises parents to keep pupils home

CAY BAY–Leonald Conner Primary School Parent-Teacher Foundation (PTF) President Jennifer Cannegieter is calling on parents to keep their children at home on Monday, as the situation at the school has worsened. Teachers and pupils noticed a heavier odour when the school re-opened on Friday morning.

Cannegieter said the situation at the school had not changed and teachers and pupils should not work under these conditions. “Please keep your children home on Monday, because teachers are unable to work and your children are the ones who are being affected by this,” she said in her message to the parents.

“As parents, we would not like to see our children suffer and at the end of the day, if anything happens to your child, there will be no teachers, no PTF, no Government is going to be next to your hospital bed. It will be you as a parent.”

The stench was so heavy that pupils had to be placed in the staff room, as it was unsafe for them outside. Children were seen having difficulty breathing with the mouth caps provided to them. Some of the pupils even drew pictures and told teachers that they did not want to die.

The teachers have had enough and planned industrial action for Monday morning, as they refuse to work under these conditions.

The GEBE power plant in Cay Bay continues to burn an unknown substance at the plant. Smoke surrounded the school most of the day, according to one parent.

Minister of Education Silveria Jacobs spoke to parents and teachers on Wednesday evening, explaining that her Ministry was doing everything in its power to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.
