Library celebrates its 95th anniversary with radiothon | THE DAILY HERALD

PHILIPSBURG–Philipsburg Jubilee Library is celebrating its 95th year of existence. In celebration of this milestone there will be a radiothon hosted by Laser 101 at the Library’s parking lot today, Saturday, 10:00am to 4:00pm.

There will be tours throughout the Library building during the radiothon, book sales of S’Maatin Then and Now!, an historic and photographic excursion, and there is the possibility to pledge donations with the objective of building back the library stronger. Food and beverages will also be for sale.

“Looking back, moving forward” is the Library’s motto. The institution has been in dire straits since the devastating hurricane season of 2017 and the subsequent looting of laptops and tablets. Staff members have been trying to make the most of the situation, working under deplorable conditions as the structure continues to deteriorate.

Currently, only 12 per cent of the Library building can be used. A small collection of the books is still available, and the Internet Café is still open, but some other services have been discontinued. Many books have been disposed of and some 8,000 titles have been lost.

Philipsburg Jubilee Library, St. Maarten National Heritage Foundation, which manages St. Maarten Museum, and St. Maarten Archaeological Centre Foundation SIMARC signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the objective to build a joint new state-of-the-art building for a National Heritage and Knowledge Centre.
