Lions back-to-school pep rallies Monday | THE DAILY HERALD

PHILIPSBURG–Among the first of many projects to be executed by the Lions Club of St. Maarten for this Lionistic year will be welcome-back-to-school pep rallies at Orange School and Asha Stevens Hillside Christian School on the first day of school, Monday, August 13.

The objective of the “welcome back” pep rallies is for members of the St. Maarten Lions Club to officially welcome back all pupils and their teachers to school at the beginning of the new academic year.

“We believe that this exercise will boost the morale, encourage and motivate all students and teachers to do their best and be successful for this year as they realise that there are others in the community who are very interested in their performance,” it was stated in a press release on Thursday.

The rallies will start at Oranje School in Philipsburg at 7:00am and at the Asha Stevens School at 7:30am. Lions Club members will stand at the entrances of the two schools to greet and meet pupils as they walk in.

Club President Lion Carmen Lake said, “As a club we hope that the pep rally will help excite the pupils as they begin a new school year, but will also help especially the very young new pupils transition into their new school.”

In her acceptance speech at the beginning of the new Lionistic year, Lake had said she firmly believed that children are not only a gift, but “they are our legacy and we must do everything in our power to ensure that our legacy lives on and thrives.”

One of the many projects on which the new board will focus is combatting hunger in the community. She mentioned plans which are already in the making, to build a state-of-the-art kitchen at the Lion’s Den to prepare breakfasts for elementary schools. Her other plans include creating emergency shelters, youth sports, arts and educational programmes for children.

“Our children need a good strong foundation and we must do everything in our power to ensure they have it,” she said. The pep rallies on Monday she hopes will motivate the children to stay focussed on study and to get all excited about learning and school.
