ST. EUSTATIUS–Statia’s youth joined hands with international stars during Tuesday’s Youth Night 2018 at Carnival Village.
The youth line-up featured a wide range of Statia’s very own talented youths, such as Savannah, Ta’Sjierni, Jahzara, Devonte, Taj, Aleah, Master Blaster Jr., Twich, Kross, and Niyomi and Naomi.
Promoter of the show was Sjahairah “Lady Shorteh” Fleming, accompanied by Suyne Robins and Francesca Dembrook.
They young artistes performed various songs, dances, skits and modelling. The young and upcoming Titus Band was also launched that night. The band consists of seven young men. Some of them will be leaving to further their studies in August.
The four main acts of the show were two-time Junior Road March Queen Kay, as well as upcoming artiste from St. Maarten Elona Richardson. Statia’s very own international artiste Big Shen, who resides in the Netherlands, blazing the airwaves with his number-one single “Yuh Body,” featuring Shockman also performed.
The headliner of the show was 15-year-old award-winning Aaron Duncan from Trinidad and Tobago, who was the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organization National Junior Calypso Monarch in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2015.
He also won multiple Junior Chutney Soca Monarch awards and received a Youth Award for Excellence in arts and culture in 2015.
He interacted with the children on stage and, at one point, jumped into the crowd and danced with his many fans. Fans were allowed to have their photo taken with Duncan after the show.
Jamm Boyzz was chosen as the favourite band to perform that night, while DJ Pleasure entertained the crowd throughout the intermissions.
First-time promoter Fleming said the show had been a learning process. “Like they say, we cannot build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future. I hold that thought very close to my heart. It is our duty to do what we have to do as a community to ensure that our youth has the future they deserve. We can inspire our youth in so many ways and the importance of this show is to ensure our youth that you do not have to be negative or do negative to have a good time or a good show,” she said.
“This show is nothing but positive vibes. This is a family show, so the intentions are not for parents to just drop off their children, but to also come along. We as parents and adults have to show support to our youths in every way possible. It’s the little things we do that count the most.”
