PHILIPSBURG–Loekie Morales participated in Children’s Book Week in Curaçao, which was held November 19-23. She was invited to the ‘Siman Ban Lesa’ by the Biblioteka Nashonal Kòrsou (BNK) as the only author of children’s books from St. Maarten.
During Siman di Ban Lesa authors and artists visit primary schools to read, act and teach children the arts in a child-friendly way. Morales has visited nine schools to tell stories and act together with the children her Mina Marina story to keep all waters in the environment clean.
“I have enjoyed the story with approximately 500 pupils from especially the target groups between the ages of seven and 13 years old,” said Morales.
The theme this year was “Friendship” or “Amistat.” With her book characters the exotic Caribbean mermaid Mina Marina, green turtle Bola and Indian merman Perucho, Morales said, “It felt great to tackle the theme of Amistad on several levels. The schools were well prepared when receiving me and the children were very enthusiastic and interested to participate actively in showing kindness, compassion, understanding and more on the theme of friendship.”
Children’s Book Week was closed off with a book signing ceremony at Mensing Caminada bookstore, where Morales was interviewed by Vigilante, which broadcast the interview on its TV and radio network.
“I am thankful and consider it a privilege to over and over again be one of the author-participants to promote reading in schools,” the author of nine Caribbean-based stories for children said.
