Louis Mussington pays homage to Aline Hanson

MARIGOT–President of Movement for Justice and Prosperity (MJP) Louis Mussington on Thursday paid homage to the late Aline Hanson, former President of the Collectivité, who was laid to rest on Wednesday.

In a press release, he said: “It was with great sadness that we learnt of the death of Madame Aline Hanson, President of the Collectivité of St. Martin, and we join the collective mourning at her passing.

“I take this opportunity to pay tribute to the one who welcomed me warmly in 1983 as a student teacher at the Bord de Mer School,” he said. “Her support and encouragement gave me immense joy to be in the teaching environment. Over time we built links to memorable friendships.

“She was very sensitive to the matter of education in St. Martin, and shared my deep attachment that bilingual education is urgently needed for St. Martin. In her capacity as President, she did what was necessary to obtain the necessary funds for the training of our young people. Promotion of the youth occupied a prominent position in her policies. Renovating the sports facilities reflected this commitment to the youth.

“Aline Hanson dedicated a great part of her life working in the public eye. At the head of the Collectivité she had a calming influence and faced difficult situations with courage and always put the general interest first. She always stuck to her principles and values.

“She won my admiration when, despite the abstention of her colleagues on the Executive Council, she supported the deliberation to stop illegal occupation of Grand Case Beach. In politics she defended her values and principles and this was one example of that.

“Despite the critics, she made it through her term of office, and during this period released financing that enabled the team in place to vote a supplementary budget to have the means to finance new projects. She made an honourable choice at the end of her mandate to vote for important measures to modify the organic law.

“We, like everyone else, are very sad that she has gone forever. She was a woman with a sense of humour, firm in her convictions but taken away from us at a young age. It is with deep emotion and profound respect that we salute her memory. Aline, St. Martin is eternally grateful.”
