Lourens appointed NIPA Interim Executive Director

PHILIPSBURG–Former Education Minister Patricia Lourens-Philip has been appointed as the Interim Executive Director of National Institute for Professional Advancement (NIPA). The Advanced Vocational Education (AVE) board made the announcement in a press release on Friday.

AVE said Lourens-Philip’s career spans close to four decades in the field of education, including serving as a high school instructor at Basseterre High School in St. Kitts and Nevis from 1975 to 1979; senior teacher at St. Maarten Academy from 1979 to 1986; Principal of the latter school from 1986 to 2001 and part-time instructor at University of St. Martin (USM) on Western Civilization from 2007 to 2009.

Lourens-Philip also served as Division Head of the Division for Educational Research, Planning and Innovation, a position she held since 2001 until her appointment as Minister of Education, Culture and Youth, and Sports for the Government of St Maarten from 2013 to December 2014.

Lourens-Philip is charged with the development of the necessary policies, procedures and strategies to facilitate the achievement of the strategic objectives of NIPA’s Board.
“It is the intention of this Board to ensure that all the right elements are in place to make NIPA the flagship educational institution of this country,” Board Chairman Antonio Aventurin said. The Board said it “will lead to a definite turn-around” for NIPA.

Lourens-Philip holds a Bachelor’s Degree in History and Economics with honours from University of the West Indies (UWI); a Master of Arts Candidate in Education from University of the Virgin Islands (UVI); Post graduate diploma in Education from University of London in the United Kingdom; Pre-Masters Diploma in Public Management and Policy from Open University in the Netherlands; Certificate in Project and programme management and current Candidate Master of Science, Public Policy and Management from Open University in the Netherlands.
