Lovers’ quarrel reason for Wednesday shooting

PHILIPSBURG–While police have started an attempted-murder investigation into the shooting of man in Middle Region on Wednesday night, reports suggest the victim is believed to be Dwayne Duhaney (27), a resident of South Reward of Jamaican descent.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that the reason behind the shooting had to do with Duhaney’s former girlfriend. A fight started in Middle Region between the ex-girlfriend’s present boyfriend and Duhaney which escalated, culminating in shots being fired.

Duhaney escaped in his vehicle and managed to call the Ambulance Service, which met him on Bush Road near the roundabout and transported him to St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) for further treatment.

The incident took place between 9:00pm and 10:00pm, but investigators hit a snag when police patrols arrived at the roundabout and one of the new officers jumped into Duhaney’s car and drove it to the nearby gas station without investigators checking the vehicle.

The Daily Herald understands that the victim is in critical condition, as he is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Doctors reportedly have placed him in a medically-induced coma, as a bullet ruptured his right lung. It is believed that shots were fired at his vehicle while he was driving away and one of the bullets hit him.

Police are requesting that any witnesses come forward to help them piece together what exactly transpired on Wednesday evening.
