Low turnout for Johnson’s Golden Box Carnival event | THE DAILY HERALD

PHILIPSBURG–Despite having popular local acts and a marketing campaign to get persons to come out to the Festival Village on Friday, the Golden Box raffle of fifty Carnival season passes had a turnout of less than 150 persons.

Minister of Tourism Stuart Jonson and Tourist Bureau officials were on hand to witness the event.

The Golden Box was launched at the Government Administration Building on November 15 and the entire island was invited to fill in Carnival Pass raffle forms and drop them in the box for a chance to win one of 50 season passes for Carnival 50, next year.

Johnson said that despite persons having much to say about the raffle, the event was a commitment to Carnival 50. He added that the special Carnival promotion was designed to encourage local participation.

St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation (SCDF) President Alston Lourens spoke at the event and thanked Johnson for his continued support for Carnival 50.

The names were called out on stage and a Carnival 50 voucher was given to each winner.

Johnson had said in a previous press statement that the passes would cost the country US $12,500.

  The event finished at 9:00pm.

The names of the 50 winners were requested on Friday evening, but up to Sunday evening, no names had been provided by Johnson or his press officer.
