MAC-CSE canteen goes cashless, school ready for new academic year | THE DAILY HERALD

BETTY’S ESTATE–The Methodist Agogic Center-Comprehensive Secondary Education (MAC-CSE) is ready to embrace the new academic year despite coronavirus COVID-19 challenges.

The school reopens today, Monday, August 9, with a full complement of “dedicated and hardworking” staff ready to teach the 25 subjects offered to students. A total of 40 new students will be joining MAC-CSE at the entry level.

“We have in place all the COVID-19 requirements as mandated by both the minister of education and the minister of health,” school official Lavonne Cort told The Daily Herald.

“To avoid unnecessary contact between students and staff members, we have initiated a cashless system in our canteen where students can pre-order at the office [and receive their orders daily – Ed.] without thronging the canteen area. We also ensured that the number of students assigned to each classroom remains small so that adequate distance can be maintained in the classrooms,” said Cort.

The school’s teachers will be moving to the classrooms to deliver their lessons throughout the school day, thus limiting the movements of the student body.

“Here at the MAC, we insist that all students and staff are familiar with our Safety and Emergency Plan. This plan has been in place since post-Hurricanes Irma and Maria and continues to be an important part of our institution’s protocols.”

As it relates to educators, Cort said MAC-CSE was able to retain local persons to fill two of the three vacancies that existed at the school. “We have not encountered problems in getting teachers from abroad. However, since at the MAC we recruit teachers who are subject-specific, in that they are fully qualified to teach the subject we advertised for, and with timely applications for work and residency permits to the relevant government entities we were able to bring in teachers from abroad when needed. This eliminates the need for dispensation requests,” she said.

In a message to students, parents and guardians, she said MAC-CSE continues to strive for excellence, building on the great foundation laid by its founders 45 years ago.
