PHILIPSBURG–The Methodist Agogic Centre (MAC) schools secured the top scores in the Foundation-Based Education (FBE) exit examinations that took place May 21- 24. Some 509 pupils sat the exams. MAC pupils attained scores of 85 per cent in English, 72 per cent in mathematics and 67 per cent in general knowledge.
The Division of Examination and Inspectorate of Education made the results of available to Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport Jorien Wuite on Monday. The highest score in Dutch was attained by the Foundation Catholic Education Schools with a score of 65 per cent.
Of the 509 pupils, 14 were of the All Children’s Education (ACE) Foundation School, 64 of Hillside Christian Schools, 147 of the Division of Public Education, 94 of Methodist Agogic Centre Schools, 34 of the Seventh-Day Adventist School and 156 of the Foundation Catholic Education schools.
The overall nationwide grade average (for mathematics, general knowledge, English and Dutch) was 61 per cent. Individually the nationwide average for mathematics was 59 per cent, general knowledge was 58 per cent, English was 76 per cent and Dutch 50 per cent.
Exams Division head Yvette Halley said on Friday that there was improvement in the scores for the subjects Dutch, English and general knowledge, but students performed better on the mathematics exams last year.
Wuite expressed her pleasure that exam grades did not appear to have suffered any negative effects from the passing of Hurricanes Irma and Maria in September 2017.
“We should take pride in the results, as the students, teachers and entire school system had to and still have to endure many challenges.
“It has been a challenging year for students as well as teachers, as many schools went through quite a bit of unsettlement also with evacuated students returning at various times to the island post-Irma. As a Ministry we were interested to see if there would be effects from the hurricane or if grades would suffer. This does not appear to be the case, as three subjects actually saw a rise in scores this year with only a slight decrease in mathematic scores,” she said.
Inspectorate of Education head Dorothee Illis-Laurence added that no significant incidents had been reported by any schools. She also said the Inspectorate would be present at the high schools’ placement meetings during the next week to monitor that the admittance criteria of each school were being adhered to.
A more comprehensive overview of the results is being completed by the Division of Examinations and from those results the Division and Inspectorate will make recommendations and present to Wuite a plan of action on future exams.
Wuite congratulated Halley and the entire Division of Examinations team for the speedy availability of the results. She also congratulated the pupils and their families for their display of resilience, dedication and focus.
