MARIGOT/ST. BARTHS– Marinas in St. Maarten such as Isle de Sol, Port de Plaisance, Marina Fort Louis in St. Martin and Simpson Bay and Marigot Bay saw many large yachts coming in around the Christmas period.
Closer to New Year’s Eve most of those disappeared, motoring off to other Islands like St. Kitts, Antigua, the Grenadines or the Virgin Islands, but a large group stayed here and headed to St. Barths to spend New Year’s Eve there, on shore or on board.
The AIS tracking app of MarineTraffic.com showed many mega-yachts docked in Gustavia filling the port to capacity while hundreds of smaller yachts and the large superyachts stayed on anchor outside in the bay.
The commercial port in St. Barths had also prepared its docks this time to accommodate mega-yachts, as they anticipated many visitors and A-list celebrities.
Yachts docked in Gustavia Harbour had to move out in the past due to heavy swells. However, this time, although there was some movement and pulling on lines, they could remain at the docks for the mega-parties in the evening and night.
In addition to “on board” festivities, thousands enjoyed the live music and party on the dock. Some of the yachts have returned already to St. Maarten/St. Martin while others are continuing their New Year charters.
The marine business will again be in full swing in the coming days and weeks, as many yachts will spend more time here waiting for their next charter or for owners to enjoy the mega-yacht life.
