ST. EUSTATIUS– Many senior citizens were out and about and “dressed to kill” during the thirteenth annual Senior Citizens Gala on Tuesday, October 15, during which Mike van Putten Youth Centre was alive with energy.
Senior Citizen Cultural Foundation (SCCF) hosted the event, moderated by Mistress of Ceremonies Alida Francis, to show appreciation to the seniors for all they have done in the past.
The gala was an initiative of SCCF Managing Director “Lady of Culture” Marcella Gibbs-Marsdin when she was head of the Department of Culture. She continued the tradition after becoming a senior citizen herself.
Various competitions were held during the evening with prizes to be won. In the Best-Dressed Female Senior Competition Melvina Lester in her fuchsia African attire won the competition. First runner-up Miss Beatrice wore black and gold sequins and second runner-up Brenda van Putten was awarded for her green and gold Indian attire.
In the Best-Dressed Male Competition Johan “Pala” Dembrook won the big prize.
Cathleene Bennett-Francis was declared the winner in the Best Hat Competition.
The seniors were treated to dinner catered by senior citizen Leonora Sneek-Gibbs, and attendees were entertained by Che “DJ Sense” Farrell.
Gibbs-Marsdin extended her thanks on behalf of all the seniors to all sponsors. “With your donations, you have shown that you understand the value that seniors [for – Ed.] all they have done for you in the past. Your donations were made to make the seniors happy, and I pray that when you reach that age, the younger generation does that for you.”
