SCHIPHOL–Two armed men arrested on a train at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport on Saturday are not thought to have been planning a terrorist offence, police said on Sunday.
The two men, aged 33 and 22, are from Amsterdam and were arrested by military police at the airport station, which is under the main terminal.
A fellow passenger had seen or heard a gun being loaded and contacted the authorities, the police said on Facebook.
Members of the Marechaussee, who are based at Schiphol, boarded the train at the airport and spotted the men, who matched the description given by the witness. One of the two men had a gun in his pocket.
In a statement, the Marechaussee said they had a special arrest team ready after receiving a report from an emergency-services number that someone was loading a weapon on the train.
“The man in possession of a firearm and his traveling companion have been detained for further investigation,” the Marechaussee said in the statement.
The investigation into where the men were going and what they were planning to do is continuing, police said.
